The grandstanding finale toys with the audience much like the Blair Witch toying with her prey. But it’s the home straight where Wingard – and the film – really come into their own, the director using all the faux documentary tools at his disposal to oversee a sustained period of genuine terror as James begins to piece together what really happened to his sister. He gets good performances from his largely unknown cast, and while none of them are as memorable as Heather Donahue weeping and screaming her way through Project's final few scenes, the actors all convince as they are thrown into increasingly distressing situations, with McCune particularly good as the loving brother who sees the truth all-too-late. Yet while there are times when the film is undoubtedly self-aware – understanding the expectations of a modern horror audience and endeavouring to confound them – it never becomes distracting or obnoxious. A character even acknowledges how annoying that particular form of jump-scare can be. We’re now all-too-familiar with the language of found footage movies, and the film has fun with that knowledge, utilising abrupt camera glitches and jolts to keep the audience on edge. Wingard’s direction is similarly assured.
But for me he gets the balance just right, taking some of Project’s best ideas and explores them in ever-more inventive sequences, building on the legend of the Blair Witch in a way that answers some questions yet poses many more.

And so six amateur filmmakers head into the Black Hills Forest in search of Heather.
Along the way they visit Lane (Wes Robinson) and his girlfriend Talia (Valorie Curry) who posted the aforementioned footage online using the pseudonym ‘Darknet666.’ But oddball Lane refuses to reveal where he found the tape unless the pair of them are allowed to join the hunting party. And with technology having improved over the intervening years, that footage is shot on webcams and head cameras (with built-in GPS no less) and even using drones.
