Skills cost SP, which replenishes over time. Depending on what situation you're in (Regular fights, Colosseum fights, or helping someone else) they'll have different effects. Skills vary from weapon to weapon, but they're how you attack in this game. Weapons provide four stats, attack and defence of the physical and magical variety. There's 6 tiers, with rarer weapons being generally better. Instruments, associated with the Minstrel class. Staves, associated with the Cleric class. Tomes, associated with the Sorcerer class. Polearms, associated with the Paladin class. Ranged, associated with the Gunner class. Hammers, associated with the Crusher class. Blades, associated with the Breaker class. There are Attack weapons and Support weapons. They're then further divided into attack and support, then further beyond that. Weapons are divided into eight classes, each associated with a character class. Weapons have a type, rarity, stats, skills, and, like any good Taro Yoko game, weapon stories.
